Yeah I want automatic call forwarding setup, where after 5 rings, if the Telkom number hasn't been answered (which obviously it won't as the lines have been stolen), it forwards to a cell no.

This new service, which joins the many others launched by Telkom in pursuit of service excellence, has been made possible by the ongoing modernisation of the telecommunication company`s networks.

IdentiCall allows customers to see who is calling even before they pick up the telephone. As soon as the telephone rings, the IdentiCall unit displays the number of the person placing the call. It also logs a record of the number, time and date of the call for later retrieval.

'This means that you can recover and return calls whenever it suits you. You don`t have to worry about rushing to the phone when you are busy with something else,' says Dan Winters, Executive: Product Development at Telkom.

The user-friendly unit, which comes packaged with a battery and a handy installment guide, attaches easily to any Telkom telephone. The IdentiCall service consists of two components, namely Number Display and Number Restriction.

Number Display enables a customer subscribing to the service to have the number of any caller displayed on his IdentiCall unit when he receives a call. Number Restriction enables a customer making a call to restrict his information from being sent down the line by dialing *31* before keying in the telephone number to which he wants to place a call. The recipient of this call will get the word 'PRIVATE' displayed on his IdentiCall unit and can then decide to take the call or not.

'The ability to manage incoming calls reduces the impact and incidence of unwanted calls. Customers can now make the choice not to accept restricted calls or those from unfamiliar numbers.

'On the other hand, those missed calls are a thing of the past as now you can immediately pick up the numbers of those people you want to talk to and answer their calls,' said Winters.

'This feature is of immediate benefit to busy work environments, where easy recognition of numbers allows employees to reroute calls more efficiently, as well as continue building on customer relationships as soon as they pick up the telephone,' he added.

The IdentiCall service is an addition to Telkom`s TalkPlus services, which also offers Call Answer, ForwardCall, Waiting Call, ConferenceCall, Urgent Call, SpeedCall and Direct-a-Call. Although all these services are highly effective when used in isolation, as a complete package they are an even more powerful telephone management tool for Telkom customers.

The units, priced at R149, 95, will be available nationwide as from mid-April 1999 at Telkom Customer Service Branches, and selected Shoprite Checkers and OK Bazaars outlets. Customers may also dial 10219 to place their orders and Telkom will deliver the units to their doorstep. A fee of R20 will be charged to activate the service and a monthly network rental of R14 is payable. (All prices include VAT.)

The service, which is being piloted in Bloemfontein as from mid-March, is accessible by about 70% of Telkom`s current customer base. All customers connected to digitised exchanges will have their information transmitted and are advised to dial *31* should they wish to restrict their information. Should a customer dialing *31* hear an engaged-type tone, he or she can assume that their exchange does not yet support this service. Indications are that all customers will be able to access the service by January 2000 when the remainder of Telkom`s exchanges have been digitised.
